There are many wonderful stories being told on television today. To be wonderful program, a series must possess many qualities. The story line needs to be easy to follow, yet challenging to the intellectual viewer; the characters must be believable and relevant. In addition it must appeal to the ear and the eye. It also must be filmed in a way that is both modern and able to withstand time. For a program to be wonderful it must possess many of these qualities; however, there is one program that has surpassed all of these expectationsGalactica.
In 2003 the Scifi Channel took a chance with Galactica. Born from a dated television from the late 70's, this series started as a movie/pilot, remotely mirroring the story line of the first series. This new program offered viewers a dark and realistic view on the original concept.
While the story line is deep, it is simple enough to enjoy. The story follows a group of human refugees fleeing their now conquered worlds. The Cylons, created by humans, break a 40 year cease fire and attack. Their first attack is against the infrastructure on the colonies. Planted deep in the fleet defense network, the Cylons through the use of human emotion and flesh and bone Cylons, added software that allows them to shut down computer networks at will. As war breaks out, the Galactica is on its way to be decommissioned. It is an older Battle-Star, lacking the networking that most new ships have, therefore it is immune to the computer attack. A battle breaks out between modern colonial fighters and the Cylons. Through the use of this computer virus, Cylons shut down the newer colonial fighters. It is a slaughter. Cylons sweep through the colonies, nuking cities and destroying the colonial fleet. In the end Galactica is the last Battle Star leading a fleet of the last humans across space seeking the safety of Earth.
The effects are stunning, both audibly and visually. The music is very appealing. The pounding of the drums during battles, provokes emotion, drawing the viewer's attention. Overall the music is well written, place and executed. Visually, the scenes are realistic and believable. Scenes on the Galactica give the viewer the impression that we are watching the crew of an antiquated aircraft carrier fight a superior force; while, scenes on Colonial One are that of a first class airplane flight.
This is not the Galactica I grew up with; special effects are modern and very realistic. The latest in CGI coupled with modern miniatures and
