As parents, watching our teenagers deal with the stress of these adolescent years is very difficult. Even though we know our children have to find their own path in this world, there are ways we can help them deal with stress. We can encourage our teenagers to utilize resources and develop outlets that assist them in dealing with the day to day stresses associated with becoming an adult. By trial and error we can aid our teenagers in dealing with stress.
Some teenagers thrive in being a part of a team activity. Most team activities provide physically exercise which is also a good way to relieve stress. Team activities are not just limited to basketball and baseball teams, but also debate, FHA, and church bible studies. Since all teenagers are made different, it is best to encourage your teen to find an activity that is best for their personality. Joining a band is also a team or group activity. Being part of a group allows teenagers to be in the same environment as others of their same ages. A sense of belonging develops. Also joining a group will prepare them for future skills they may need in the workplace. Allowing teenagers to be in like environments as their peers may help in dealing with the stress of every day life.
Encourage your teen to read. Some teenagers will find reading helps them relieve stress. Give them opportunity to choose what they would like to read, rather than making them read because it is a homework assignment. Also make certain they are reading material that is age appropriate. Fantasy stories may allow them to find comfort in their own imagination. Entering into a world where anything can happen may be just the break your teenager needs to take some of the burdens of being a teenager away for a little while.
Be a good listener. Take the time every day to talk and to listen to your teenager. This may seem minimal, but nonetheless very important. Sometimes teenagers just need the opportunity to talk and vent about the stresses of the day. Take fifteen minutes every day just to give your teenager the chance to talk to you. Even if you child chooses not to talk, allow the time frame to remain open. There may come a time when they want to talk to you. Never close the communication between you and your teen. Make them aware frequently you desire to know what is going on in their life and you are there to support them.
Music also can be a relaxing way for teenagers to cope with stress. I strongly suggest scanning the lyrics of the music your teenage listens to. If music helps them relax, and the lyrics are acceptable, allow your teen the opportunity to play music in the comfort of their room at a suitable level. You may find by allowing your teenager the chance to relax for about thirty minutes right after school, they will have a much easier time doing homework and home chores. Sometimes they need some time for their minds to rest.
Find a method that helps your teenager relax and deal with stress. It make take some time in finding what works for them. Let them know you understand that life is not always a bed of roses. Perhaps tell your teen what methods you use for relation. They may be interested in hearing that even you, their parent, had to find a way to deal with stress.
