One of the best solutions, for the problem of how to save on heating cost, is to slow our consumption of gas and oil and use them in ways that are more prudent. The most thought provoking truth, brought to our attention by the recent focus on Global Warming, is that no resource is endless.
Fresh air, clean water and fuel for cars and heating homes are problems we must now address and for which we must find solutions. Regardless of how financially blessed we may be, we must all search for solutions, for to do otherwise is to waste the resources our children will need in the future.
Heating our home is a necessity of life that can be quite costly, especially in colder climates. However, there are some simple, low cost steps you can take to save on heating cost whether you use a central unit, fireplaces and other wood burners, wall units or radiators.
1-Turn down the thermostat.
*Turning down the thermostat by only two degrees, brings a savings you can see on your next heating bill.
*Find a setting you can live with and leave it there.
*Adjust your clothing, not the thermostat
2-Insulation and weather stripping
*A high percentage of heat is lost through poorly insulated exterior walls and attics. Making an investment in adequate insulation will cost you now but save you more in the end. Be sure you have at least seven inches in your attic. In this instance, more really is better.
*Use weather stripping around all doors and windows.
*Caulk around windowpanes.
*Use foam sealant where water pipes enter the house and where they enter rooms, such as under sinks.
3-Little things make a big difference.
*Close off rooms you are not using.
*Clean both the heat and return air vents regularly.
*Change filters when recommended by manufacturer or when needed.
*Use reverse mode for ceiling fans to blow the rising heat back into the room.
*On sunny days, open curtains on south facing windows. Free heat! Close those at night if windows are not double paned.
*Keep exterior door areas clear and unobstructed for faster in and out.
4-Consider long-term investments for saving on heat cost.
*Consider installing double paned energy efficient windows in your home.
*Consider planting fast growing trees for a windbreak.
*When replacing your heating system, consider one with an Energy Star rating.
*Consider solar panels to offset the cost of heating your home.
Try these ideas and think of more. The cost of implementing these steps is minimal when compared to long-term savings. We can reduce heating cost significantly, if we make an effort. We owe it to ourselves; we owe it to the next generation.
