There is a place under your house that you utilize by storing holiday decorations, old clothes and miscellaneous items. You very rarely go down into the space because it is cold, damp and has bugs, but all that can change. You can take the space that you use to store all of your old stuff and turn it into a haven away from the world. Whether you have a regular basement, daylight or walkout, there are many options available to you for remodeling your basement.
The first thing you need to do is determine what you want to use the space for, what do you need added to your house to make it more complete. This could be a new family room, an extra bedroom, exercise room, an office or even a home theater area, the options are endless. Once you go through the different basement remodeling ideas, make sure you write them down to be able to refer back to them at a later date. This is a good time to write down as many ideas as you can think of, you will be able to eliminate some of those ideas at a later time, but in the beginning it will help you to brainstorm and come up with as many ideas as you can to help make the process go smoother.
The next thing you need to do is get some magazines or research online to see what you like. Maybe, you want to put in a game room, complete with pool table and then you decide you want to add a wet bar to the area. If you are looking through magazines and articles, then you will be able to come up with a more firm idea of what you want. This is the planning stage. It will help you to look at companies who have done basement remodeling as they will show pictures of the different rooms they have completed and give you more ideas for what you like and don't like.
Once you have gotten a rough idea of what you want then you can start calling contractors. They will normally come out and give you a free estimate for remodeling your basement. You will want to have a few different contractors come out as they will come up with different ideas and price ranges to help you make your decision. It will take them a couple of days to get back to you after they have viewed your basement and looked over the ideas you are interested in, but once they get back to you they will normally have basement remodeling plans to show you with their ideas. A basement remodeling can cost anywhere from $20,000 to upwards of over $100,000, depending on how elaborate you want to make the area.
There are a few ways to reduce the cost of a basement remodeling. You can do some of the work yourself if you are so inclined, but remember the area still needs a permit to do the work and it will need to be inspected to make sure it passes fire and building codes. You can also talk to your contractor and they will normally work on the area in shifts so that you don't have to pay as much upfront. Contractors normally don't mind if they are going to work on the basement three summers in a row, as it is a good way to keep business coming in. The most important part of remodeling your basement is to have fun and enjoy not only the experience of transforming a cold, damp area into a haven for your entire family, but to enjoy the time you will be able to spend with your family in your new basement.
Remodeling a basement will add to the value of your house by increasing the amount of living space and overall completeness of your home. It will make your home feel like it is a complete and not always in the building stage. Enjoy your home and your wonderful new basement and remember if you do put the home theater room into your basement, don't turn the subwoofer up to loud as you want your house to stay standing.
