A Message From The Ashes.
It had been a long, long day, ever since my wife and I parted company two years ago I always had my five year old daughter Jay to stay with me every weekend, It was a kind of amicable arrangement where I got to see my daughter and my ex got a few free days each week, I loved these weekends just me and her, the only problem was that she seemed to want to fit the entire week that she had not been with me into two short days, The result was that every time we reached our planned destination five minutes later she wanted to move on to the next.
I remember, it was a dark and rainy November night when we arrived back at the small farm I rented, It was just on the outskirts a small town in England called Congleton, "Welcome To Roaring Gate Farm", announced the sign on the gate, It was a spooky old place but we both loved it, during the week I could write and record my music without the aggravation of neighbors complaining about the noise, It also had a small stables where I kept my horse Gibson and Jay's small pony Minnie.
After quickly parking the car we ran across the yard into the welcome shelter of the farmhouse, It was an old building, and stone lentil over the front door read: Isaac Kelpcher - Rebuilt In 1826, Inside it was freezing but we soon had a log fire roaring in the grate, After we tea we sat down to the customary hour or so of drawing, painting and poetry.
It was now just after 9:30pm and Jay was tucked up safely in bed and was now fast asleep, charging her little batteries ready for tomorrow, I got a beer from the fridge, put some music on and sat in the old wingback chair to watch the flames flickering on the wall, drifting along with the music I fell asleep.
I'm not to sure what time it was but I was woken by a noise from upstairs, Jay often rolled around in her sleep and fell out of bed so I went upstairs to check on her, When I opened the door to the small room the sheets were pulled back and Jay was gone, She must have gone to the bathroom I thought and went to check, The light was out and she was not there either.
I started to run around the old house in a panic going through each room and turning on the lights, With every empty room my heart sank a little lower and panic gripped me a little harder, I went through every room in the house and then ventured out into the rainy night to look in the stables, I could just about see the silhouettes of the horses, they seemed a little spooked at this late intrusion, Jay was not there
