Headaches: Causes and treatment options

Headaches can be debilitating or just a mild inconvenience, depending on the severity of the headache and the cause of the headache. For people who are prone to them, they find the treatment that works or them and normally stay with it, even if it isn't completely effective. Normally, the type of headache can be determined by where the pain is centralized and this will help to make a determination of the type of treatment to eliminate the headache.

A pain or discomfort from a sinus headache is normally centralized over and around the eyes. It can be a sharp stabbing pain or a dull, throbbing pain. The best treatment for this type of headache is an antihistamine or a saline spray to help clear the pressure in the sinus cavities. If the problems persist for more than a couple of days it is smart to go see a doctor as it could get progressively worse and form into a sinus infection.

A tension headache is most often associated with discomfort at the base of the skull with pain radiating up into the skull and down through the next and shoulders. If you would prefer not to take medication then a favorable remedy would be a visit to a massage therapist. This type of headache can lead to cluster headaches and migraines. It is important to determine what is causing the stress in your life and try to eliminate or reduce it if possible. If you are going to take medicine to relieve the pain then aspirin will work but a muscle relaxant would work better.

Migraines can be caused by many different things, from the foods you eat to the environment you live in. They can be caused by external sources or internal sources. If you are prone to migraines then you need to visit a doctor to determine the cause to help choose the best treatment to reduce and eliminate the pain. Migraines can cause sensitivity to light and noise so it is helpful to stay in a dark, quiet room at the beginning of a migraine to help reduce the effects on you later. A cool cloth over the eyes will also help to reduce the effects on you. Normally the best medication to reduce the pain associated with migraines is a doctor prescribed medication but ibuprofen is helpful. Over the counter migraine medicine is normally only ibuprofen or acetaminophen with caffeine added to them. The caffeine helps relax the blood cells and reduce the pressure of the migraine.

Cluster headaches are normally associated with around one eye and can radiated through that side of your face, but rarely move to the other side of your head. The pain from a cluster headache can wake you up from a sound sleep and can occur several times during a day. One of the best treatments to help with a cluster headache is oxygen or doctor prescribed medication. There are also extreme cases where surgery can be utilized to help with the treatment of cluster headaches.

If you are prone to headaches, especially severe headaches, then it is intelligent to seek the advice of a licensed doctor to help you determine the best treatment for the elimination of the pain of headaches. Most medicines if taken for a long period of time can be detrimental to your health so try and locate the cause of the headache to determine the best course of action to eliminate the headache instead of trying to find a medication that will deaden the pain.
