Should Multiple Personality Disorder Be Considered A Disorder Of The Mind Protecting Itself?
The above question raises many more. First, the mental illness profession is half for and against the fact that true multiple personality disorder exists. Yet, for those that have witnessed it as a feasible and logical possibility it does. That said, . . . this author asks why are we giving another excuse?
My ex of eighteen years, originally diagnosed as bipolar, went very public a while back and well, . . . his friends, co-workers and new people that he met along the way, called me and continued to ask, what is wrong with him? We sat down and counted four of him. I said you are behind, . . . I count twelve.
In the middle of let's just call the "meltdown", I actually attended a doctor appointment with him and we specifically discussed bipolar. The "ex" looking like a drugged out, anorexic with dark circles under his eyes, could not sit still if his life depended on it, . . . blurted out to the doctor, . . . "I have multiple personalities".
The doctor replied. "No you don't. That is the disease at work and you just need to take this pill Depakote like a vitamin every day." The description of Depakote is described in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as used for a preparation of Divalproex sodium which is explained in the online HealthOnline website as Divalproex sodium affects chemicals in the body that may be involved in causing seizures.
He was not having a seizure. He believed he had multiple personalities. Some part of him knew (or made yet another excuse) that he was out of control and that he needed some type of assistance, but he was unable to verbalize it. Could I help? Not at all as I had no EXCUSE for his behaviors, having had to deal with his release from an extremely good and long term career the day before.
There is something seriously wrong in the head with my ex. It is compounded by alcoholism and drug abuse but that is NOT the cause. The cause is some type of mental illness(es) and I know only too well, as I have seen it, recorded it, studied it, been told by other witnesses that saw and have documented it for years.
Whether he has multiple personalities or not, I have to ask why would we begin again making excuses as in, is it ONLY the mind protecting itself? Borderline personality disorder, Narcissistic personality disorder and the like, can all present themselves in similar scenarios as protecting itself.
So this author asks the question. What is the brain
