As a child, I often sensed a presence near me when there was no one else nearby. I would sometimes hear a voice whispering to me but just thought it was my imagination.
We lived in a large Victorian era house in New England that could be rather creepy after dark. It was the kind of house that had a large living room that opened into another room that was used as our dining area and den. The paneling on the walls and beams on the ceilings were dark wood. The kitchen and pantry were at the back of the house, and also had dark paneling on the walls. The second floor consisted of three large bedrooms that opened onto a long hallway. A stairwell at the front of that hallway led to the two attic rooms. I always avoided the attic whenever possible, but always felt comfortable in my room. It had large windows, and wallpaper with tiny rosebuds on it. I had pink and white curtains and bedspread. It was a typical girl's room. We'd hear the typical creaks and groans that are normal in old houses At night, but I always felt like someone was keeping watch over me. It was a little different when I had to get up late at night and walk to the bathroom.

Before I left the bathroom, I looked out the window. Our backporch light was on, and the light illuminated part of the yard. I was astonished to see a girl standing there, looking up at me. She had long hair and was wearing an old fashioned white dress. I was so astonished, I just stood there staring down at her. Just as I was about to call out to her, she simply vanished in front of me. I ran out of the bathroom toward my bedroom. All I could think of was getting back into my room. I didn't realize how fast I was running, when suddenly I heard a woman's voice say "stop." When I kept on going, I distinctly felt a hand grab me by the arm and pull me back. I fell down on the floor, and realized I was at the top of the staircase. If I hadn't been pulled back, I would have gone headfirst down the stairs. I looked behind me to see who it was that grabbed me, but there was no one there. I never said anything to my parents, but it made a lasting impression on me. I learned not to run down that hallway, but I did look for the girl I had seen. She never appeared to me again, and shortly after that, we sold our house and moved into another house across
