Becoming a great manager is not the easiest task to accomplish. The problem is, executives gauge your management ability on certain statistical data such as profit, turnover ratio, sales, expenses, etc. On the other hand, your employees do not gauge your management ability on these statistics. Instead, your employees gauge your management ability on their notions of fairness and on their opinion of your ability to make the workplace an enjoyable place. Therefore, the question becomes, how do you create a profitable staff while at the same time making the workplace a fair and enjoyable place?
Some people are of the opinion that it is better to create profits to the detriment, if need be, of your employees' senses of happiness and fairness. These people believe that only the bottom lines of the accounting sheets are what matter. There is some truth in this because without company profits, there is no company and thus, there is no job for you. However, I also believe that having happy employees will make them want to work harder for you. Thus, the statistics with which executives are so concerned will show positive results due to the hard work of your employees.
The other school of though about management (and the school of thought with which I better relate) is that taking care of your employees should be your primary concern. The theory is, by taking care of your employees, your employees will work longer and harder for you. As a result, company profits will be increased and your turnover rate will decrease. Additionally, the office culture will be comfortable and open. Thus, your employees will not be afraid to talk to you about employment problems. Because your employees will be more willing to discuss employment problems with you, you will be able to solve their problem before it begins to negatively affect that employee's work.
It is important to note that although you want your employees to feel comfortable around you, you still have to establish yourself as the authority in the workplace. As such, when you need to assert your authority as the boss, you need to do so. Remember, part of an effective workplace is the employees' perception of fairness. This fairness can only be established by your authority as a manager.
Whatever school of thought you decide to follow, if you do your job to the benefit of yourself, your company, and your employees, your management abilities will not be questioned.
