How to survive a zombie Apocalypse

A zombie apocalypse suggests that a zombifying virus has spread and converted the vast majority of the human population. If the zombifiying virus mutates enough to cross species, well, then there is no survival. If the zombie virus is carried by mosquitoes or fleas, or God forbid cockroaches, then there really is no chance for survival in the long term, so I will assume that only humans are being turned.

In the Short Term. Think Versatility.
As soon as you recognize a zombie plague, it is best to move fast, since the plague will spread exponentially, and humans will be outnumbered by zombies within a week, if not days. Gather your friends in a small and cohesive group: the noncommittal, the pacifist and the phobic need not apply. The best vehicle for transportation will probably be motorcycles, because of their versatility and size.

As for weapons, think versatility. A crowbar is arguably the best weapon in the case of zombie attack. It is an excellent crushing weapon and can cause the necessary brain damage required to off an undead. But better is its usefulness in a whole range of possible venues, like breaking and entering, smashing and grabbing, or lifting and separating. Shovels and axes are likewise very good weapons. A katana, unless of really good quality, will be less than useful because it will break under any real use before very long, and the cheap varieties will not hold an edge for very long. Firearms, even automatic weapons, are problematic. The rate of fire may make them excellent for killing mundane humans, but they are not efficient against zombies. The problem of reloading and finding ammunition after the first week make them less than ideal.

For a home base, there are very few really good venues. The most ideal situation is a bank. Banks are often built with limited window access and these are often highly reinforced. A normal home is a nightmare to defend, considering all the windows and doors to barricade. In a pinch, go up stairs and destroy the stairs behind you. Of course, take a ladder up there with you. Zombies, in large enough numbers can take down a house, and they may even mass enough numbers to pile on top of each other and reach a second floor. If there are that many zombies around you, then you should have skipped ahead to End Game.

After A Bit. Think Isolation.
After the initial panic, you will begin to contemplate more permanent solutions. If you have survived the initial onslaught of the undead, you need to consider more permanent
