Throwing a terrific party takes planning and a few key items. You'll often be tempted to throw a "theme" party, but even if you don't throw a "pirate party" or a "kitchen bridal shower," the reason for the party serves as a theme in itself.
You'll need:
* food, particularly finger food and appetizers
* beverages, including alcohol if you choose to serve it
* an activity that fits your theme or occasion
* decorations to fit the theme without breaking your budget!
Most of the time, the activity will come from the theme of the party. If you're throwing a birthday party, the main activity is the cake and gift-opening. Bridal showers and baby showers really don't need the plethora of silly games, but there are always a few die-hard shower-throwers who insist. If you're the honoree at this event, just smile and take it in stride. If you're having a luau, sneak in a Carribbean vibe and have a limbo contest! For limbo, you need a broomstick and a couple of volunteers to hold it steady.
Children's parties need more structured activities, like games, and you'll find the children's party supply aisle often includes toys and party favors as well as games to play with the kids. Remember that any party favor given out at the party will be opened and played with on-site, so don't hand out the screaming noisemakers unless you have a couple of earplugs and some aspirin on hand.

Food breaks down barriers, and can even lead to significant friendships. How many couples have found each other through a stray touch of the hands in a popcorn bowl? Finger foods are best for any party that doesn't revolve around dinner. Even if you're hosting a dinner party, finger foods make an excellent appetizer. Every person should know how to make one great appetizer that they can bring to a potluck and make it a hit. Deviled eggs are a good, easy one, but they're hard to transport.
If you're an adult, you'll need to decide whether you're interested in serving alcohol at your parties, and which kinds. Some of your friends won't see it as a party without booze, but the type of alcohol can change the tone of the party, as well as fit the theme. Having a sophisticated dinner party? Serve a few bottles of good wine. Superbowl parties deserve beer. For luaus and pirate parties, stir up some tropical rum punch!
A lot of adults overlook the decorations, assuming
