To become a good salesperson you must learn to be comfortable with all the aspects of selling, which include: Prospecting, Selling (Pitching), Closing, Follow-up and Ask for Referrals.
A good salesperson is someone with a genuine interest in people, belief in the product and the company that's selling the product. If any of these basic elements are missing, then you'll have trouble being believable to prospective customers.
There is no particular personality or social style that is required to be good at selling. Some salespeople are studious and quiet natured, while others are loud and raucous. Let's take a closer look at the basics of selling:
Prospecting - By phone, on-line, door to door or via referrals... You have to have someone to talk to about your great product or there is no chance of a sale.
Selling - This is the sales pitch, or presentation. You may have to go through several steps before reaching this stage. For example, you may need to call several times before confirming a definite appointment or you may need to call 10 people to find 1 that's willing to talk to you.... You transition out of the presentation to the close with closing statements such as "... would you like the red one or the blue one today?..." or "...now how many are you taking today, one or two dozen...." or "...Okay, so you would like ....., Is that right?.... Great! I'll write it up right now!"
Follow up - This is especially important is there's a grace period for your client to change their minds. Send a thank you card the day they buy from you so it arrives in a day or so... and/or send an email with your contact information (make sure you give them more exciting information... "Nice meeting you today, congratulations again on your new car...I'll make sure it has a full tank of gas and a good clean before you come to pick it up tomorrow evening... take special care and I'll see you soon...)
Ask for Referrals - If you treat people well, then over time, you'll become known as the best salesperson in your field and you will get referrals. People love to talk to their friends and family about their new purchases... You can plant a seed in their
