Finding a good fighting game on Microsoft's latest home console can be as daunting of a task as finals week in college. Since the release of Team Ninja's Dead or Alive 4 few new, unique, and compelling fighting games have made its way to the Xbox 360. Here is a break down of the few good ones available.
Dead or Alive 4 (DOA 5) - About just as old as the Xbox 360 this game was released over 2 years ago. However, with such a shallow pool of games to choose from you'll have to dig deep. DOA 4 features a good amount of unlockable characters and a robust online multiplayer mode. Online play may be a bit obsolete now considering the game is over 2 years old. For those looking for a solid fighting game or those who are fans of the DOA series, this fourth installment does not dissapoint.
Virtual Fighter 5 Online - Is slightly younger than DOA 4, slightly over a year old. Graphically VF5 is a beautiful game, however audio is your run of the mill experience. Game play offers a great verity of combos and AI difficulty is nicely done. 17 different fighters to choose from and a large amount of unlockable items and accessories. Multiplayer can be done locally or online using Xbox Live. My only grumble with VF5 is the poor voice acting from the commentators
Honorable Mention - Def Jam: Icon - a mediocore game with a few unfortunate oddities. However, as I said earlier fighting games are slim pickings on the 360. Beggars can't be choosers.
If these two games haven't given you the fix you were looking for Xbox Live offers a few old school style games, 2D. Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting should hold you over until the 360 gets a batch of new and improved fighters.
Thankfully the future looks bright for 360 owners. Soulcalibur IV is set to hit store shelves sometime in June of 2008. Xbox 360 owners will also get a special treat. Yoda, the little green Jedi master of Star Wars, has been confirmed as an exclusive playable character. DOA 5 is also rumored to be in the works. It seems like the 360 only gets one quality fighting game each year. Soulcalibur IV would fill that void for 2008 and DOA 5 could appear for 2009.
