Is life worth living?

How often have we heard someone utter the simple yet profound words 'is life worth living?' In most instances this comment is simply an automatic reaction to something that has gone wrong in his or her life, usually temporarily and therefore not a thought that they really and answer for. Indeed, in the general context of the question it is difficult to answer it either positively or negatively. What is worth or has value to me will differ from another person's values and worth and the same is true of life. Just because my life is worth living it does not automatically follow that the same is true for someone else.

Let us look first at the things that, in my view, make life worth living. Perhaps one of the most important factors in this respect is based upon emotional factors such as love, happiness and pleasure. Love is a beautiful emotion and one that can fill our whole being with a wonder of feeling that really makes us feel special and cared for by others. The love given to and received from that special person in our life and our children, family and friends is an experience that truly makes you long for it to continue for as many days and years as possible.

Happy experiences, for example, time spent with the family enjoying the pleasures of life is another positive for the value of life. The sound of children's laughter when they are enjoying themselves is magical and never fails to move me and, even after they have grown up I want to experience those same joys again through grandchildren and the coming generations. Similarly, just to be part of those special occasions, which would include births, marriages and those successful moments of achievement that fill every child's growing up phase is awe inspiring and leaves me thirsting for more.

The next item on my list of things that makes life worth living is the excitement of knowledge and discovery. The anticipation of what new things lie around the next corner or await us the following day is part of the rich tapestry of this life. For example, if one is an avid traveller there are always new places of natural beauty to find and new cultures and communities to discover. Similarly with work, new ideas and processes are developing all the time, which can make this part off our lives equally exciting. We create aims and ambitions in our careers and seeing these come to fruition.

Nothing every stands still in terms of our experiences and for those who think life is worth living that makes
