STAND UP FOR OUR KIDS - CANADIAN SENATE REPORT URGES

Hello! Is anybody home? Whom are they try to kid? From the beginning of time, parents stood up for their children by protecting them from harm of all sorts, providing for them, raising them to be responsible, teaching them to distinguish between right and wrong and the list goes on. That is how parents of years gone by stood up for their children without a government telling them what to do or how to do it!

I'm referring to a by-gone era, when society's smallest common denominator was the all-important traditional family. It consisted of a husband (male), a wife (female) and one or more children. Traditional families then formed urban and rural communities, communities grew into villages and cities, and jointly they formed territories and provinces that made up this great country, Canada.

The children of years gone by were well fed and had appropriate clothing. They learned to play alone or in a group and to get along with others, early in their lives. They also learned to respect their elders, even before they went to school.

When they went to school, they went there to learn; basic skills at first then skills that prepared them for Life. Life then also included belonging to a religious group that worshiped either on the Sabbath or on the day of rest, on Sunday.
Those were the days when teachers were not only educators but advisors as well. The schools and the teachers were an extension of the child's home environment, guiding them through the difficulties of growing up, helping them to find their comfort zone in Life.

In those days, discipline was not so much as talked about rather it was applied in the home, in the school and in society. One of the disciplinary measures was spanking not as the politically correct expression of corporal punishment implies it today! Spanking, applied at strategic moments, served as a deterrent and it was effective.

Moral standards were instilled into children and young adults as well. In addition to what moral standards the parents instilled into their own children, those were also reinforced by the rabbi, the priest and or the minister.

That is exactly how we stood up for our children.

In April 2007, the un-elected Canadian Senate's Human Rights Committee released a 296-page report that was intended to move the elected members of the House of Commons (Government of Canada) to act on twenty-four of its recommendations. If you do the math, you'll readily see that, on an average,
