Why do people eat wild food? The food is cheaper and you know where it comes from. What are the types of wild food enthusiasts? There are many types of wild food enthusiasts including, but not limited to, primarily carnivore, omnivore, vegetarian, environmentarians, vegan, 8 mile, 100 mile, and inclusive or exclusive of garden produce. Some people supplement their normal diet with wild foods and others use wild food as either their primary diet or their entire diet.
Carnivores: People who eat either entirely or mostly meat. They have to take vitamin supplements because B, A, and C vitamins may be missing entirely from their diet. Examples of their diet: Squirrel, turtle, raccoon, various fish and so on.
Omnivores also known as Hunter/Gatherers: People who eat all kinds of meat, bark, berries, fish, roots, leaves, seeds, etc. Eating insects may or may not be part of their diet. Examples of their diet: clover flowers, wild potato roots, maple syrup/sap, spruce needle tea, as well as deer, squirrel, raccoon, fish etc. More expert people may also gather mushrooms. Vegetarian: People whose beliefs are against eating meat. May also include beliefs against eating animal products (vegan). They would be gathering berries, bark, roots, leaves, seeds, nuts, all the aspects of the plant, tree, and weed world. Most have to watch to make sure that they have all the vitamins and iron they need. Examples of their diet: Cat tail roots, fiddle head ferns, edible wild flowers, pine needle tea, and so on.
Environmentarian: Usually a vegetarian that their source of food is primarily or completely wild foods. Review vegetarian and Omnivore above. Word often found used in the book, Survival Acre by Linda Runyon.
8 mile diet: Distance a person is believed to be able to walk or ride a horse in order to obtain food locally. If gathered in the wild, in my area, that would be mostly by walking. They may also come under any of the other headings above. This may also include a "trade item" or a few of food items that are farther away, but can be obtained in the 8 mile area.
