The rain was pelting down, Paul could barely hear himself think. Trees whipped around in the ferocious wind, leaves and branches that weren't quite strong enough to withstand the force of the storm littered the streets and gutters. As Paul stood in the west wing of his three-story Brisbane mansion gazing outside, a sough of wind knocked on the French doors persistently.
The storm however was the furthest thing from his mind. Butterflies fluttered relentlessly in the pit of his stomach as he rehearsed over and over again the speech he would be giving in just over an hour.
This was the biggest night of his life; he was going to propose to his girlfriend Kelly. He had never before known the depth and complexity of the emotions. He had never before been in love, not even close. However, Kelly, she had captured his eye and his heart from the moment they had first met. He imagined her long golden hair and piercing green eyes, imagined holding her strong, athletic body in his arms as she gently nuzzled her face against his neck.
Kelly was not only beautiful, but she was also smart and funny, averting all eyes on her when she walked into a room, demanding attention, though gracefully and without force. Paul ran his fingers through his dark, wavy hair as he glanced at his reflection one final time before deciding he was ready to go.
Kelly had been away on business in Europe for the past two weeks so he was keen to finally have her in his arms again. She would have arrived home earlier today, but they had agreed to wait until tonight to see each other to celebrate their one-year anniversary.
Paul armed the security alarm before descending down to the garage where his yellow Monaco awaited him. As he stepped out of the lift, the only sound was the echo of his footsteps and the shrill beep-beep of the car alarm De-activating.
Paul lived in St Lucia, about 20 minutes from the city, where his main office was. Kelly lived in a quiet back street off Holly-well Road in Sunny bank Hills. While her house could hardly be compared to Paul's sprawling mansion, it was still a large, modern house well above that of an average working families. On a normal day, the drive to Kelly's place would take him about 45 minutes. Tonight however, he anticipated it would probably take an hour due to the poor weather conditions.
The closer he got to her house, the more nervous he became, even bordering on terrified, yet at the same time so excited. Again, such conflicting emotions, like nothing
