Those of us who are pro-life need to think critically about where exactly it stands vis-a-vis other important moral issues this election cycle. Unfortunately, given the imperfect structure of our political system, voting for a pro-life candidate usually means also voting for the war. While candidates as individuals may be pro-life AND anti-war, the powerful and polarized political parties force candidates (and therefore voters) to decide whom they'd rather save: millions of unborn babies, or millions of yet-to-be-slaughtered human beings.
As Rudy Giuliani discovered, candidates can't earn the presidential nomination without paying lip service to respective parties' key "values"-not because the parties care about abortion one way or the other, but because they've accepted tons of money from lobbyists who do. One must either side with the "baby-killers" on the Left or the "homophobic gay-bashers" on the Right. Mitt Romney knows it, and has flip-flopped accordingly on same-sex marriage.
None of our candidates, not even Huckabee, see abortion as a vital issue, but they all take the stance required of politicians in their party. Make no mistake, thoughMcCain, Romney, Huckabee, and even Hillary Clinton WILL all take us to war with Iran. Obama will not, nor will Edwards or Ron Paul. Thus, the special interests who stand to make billions of dollars on another war are doing everything in their power to smear the candidates who can't be bought.
We need to begin seeing this superficial divide for what it is. The atrocities of slavery and the Holocaust exemplify what happens when an entire nation refuses to think for itself. Why not do some research on the powerful corporations and foundations who co-opted the Bush Administration into the 935 lies they told to get us into Iraq? Why not ask ourselves which campaigns they are currently funding. Anyone who is "pro-life" should respect all life-not just those belonging to unborn babies. Citizens have an obligation, then, to make sure our government never sends soldiers to kill and die unless the cause is just and threat credible. By failing to consider the broad range of issues, we as voters turn our backs on America's future, and on the unborn children who will live here.
