When I had my baby shower, I thought the best gifts were the cute outfits my friends bought for my newborn child. However, after the baby came I realized that the best gifts I got came from experienced moms who really knew what a new mom needs. Although they may not be the most fashionable or glamorous gifts, these items stood the test of time long after those newborn outfits were packed away with their tags still on them.

Bounce with me

A bouncy seat is a must because it is soothing, portable, and versatile. If you purchase one that has an adjustable back, it can be used for naps, playtime, and even early spoon feedings. Some come with attached toys and vibration, which only adds to the appeal.

The gift of warmth

A fleece car seat cover is great for the winter as it allows you to transport your baby without having to fuss with jackets, a must when you have a sleeping baby that you want to move from the car to the house without waking him or her. The parent simply removes the cover off the carseat once they get inside so the baby does not overheat.

Baby's number one accessory

A package of diapers is one item that a new parent never has enough of. Sometimes you can find a local person who makes diapers into artistic creations like cakes for a unique and creative gift.

Attachment parenting

A great way to keep baby close while Mom or Dad keeps her or his hands free for housework. Also, provides a mother with a great deal of freedom for going out in the world while always having baby close and secure. If you can find one that allows baby to face out it is great for the baby too, as it gives him or her and opportunity to see the world from the security of mom or dad's torso.

Since it is often hard to tell the gender of babies, a great gift for someone having a baby girl is an assortment of hair accessories that will allow her to express her girly side from day one. Headbands, clips, and girly hats designed specifically for babies are widely available but often overlooked by gift givers.

Don't forget the hose

Another great gift for baby girls is an assortment of tights in various sizes. Moms love putting their little ladies into cute dresses. Those outfits do not have to be banished to only the warmer months of the year. Girly dresses look extra cute layered over a pair of leggings or tights and this makes it possible to get that much more wear out of them.

Supporting the team

For baby boys, baseball caps can serve the same purpose of gender identification while providing the baby with some extra protection from the sun. Find out what Dad's favorite team is and get the baby boy a whole ensemble of that team. Along those same lines you can get baby clothes from the parents' alma maters. Parents like to train their kids early to support their favorite teams and schools, so why not get in on the effort?

A personal touch

Anything handmade takes on an extra special significance. A quilt is a wonderful gift as the child can use it for many years and you can customize the fabric and design. If you are not crafty yourself you can always purchase a handmade quilt at a craft fair or look into people who custom make such items in your neighborhood. If this is not an option you could also purchase a blanket and bring it to have it embroidered with the baby's name and date of birth. Also, there are needlepoint kits that allow you to create a personalized gift. If you go to the trouble to make something like that, it is well worth it to have it professionally framed so that it is ready to display without any further work from the parents.

Ultimately, your time and effort in choosing the right gift will pay off when you see the parent or child enjoying or making good use of what you got them.
