ETYMOLOGY: Mia is pronounced MEE-ah. This is a name with many meanings.
In Italian and Spanish it is a possessive form, possibly due to a the phrase "cara mia" where mia means "my", however, it is also a variation of Maria which mean wished for child or rebellion. Yet, it is also a Danish and Swedish pet name for Maria that means beloved. While in Hebrew it means uncertain.

ORIGIN & HISTORY: The specific origin of Mia is unknown, however, it is thought to be of Hebrew, Latin, or Scandinavian in origin. In Hebrew Mia is the feminine abbreviation of Michael. The original name is to believed to be Miriam, sister to Moses and Aaron. Miriam means whishing for a child. Mia in Latin and Scandinavian is thought to be a form of Maria and Mary.

POPULARITY: The name Mia first appeared in the United States Social Security Administration in the 1960's and the popularity of the name continues to grow. In 2006 0.576 % of those that applied for a social security card where named Mia. In my opinion the increase in popularity is due to popular figures such as Mia Hamm and in the Latino communities because of Mia Colucci.
