Tips for a long lasting marriage

My wife and I married when we were eighteen years old. We dated for three years and were more than ready to begin our adult life together. It was the mid 70's, Disco clubs were popular and couples our age began clubbing and partying until the wee hours of the morning. Booze flowed like water and monogamy went out the window like smoke from incense.

Many young couples were caught up in this new wave of anything goes and their married life got off to a rocky start. "Let's go party" was the catch phrase so many couples partied freely which led to heartaches and break-ups. We did not know much about marriage at that time, yet we could see that a partying and boozing life style was not a good recipe for a strong lasting relationship. Thus began our journey to discovering how to make a marriage strong and lasting. We thought our married life would automatically fall into place. You know build a house, have kids, buy cars, take vacations. Whew did we have a lot to learn.

This bond that started in the 70's has lasted until the present and we plan on far beyond. My wife hasn't kicked me out yet so either she has finally gotten me to where she wants or is just tired of trying. Actually we have a great relationship, and I will tell you it did not happen over-night. Do we have some tips for a long lasting marriage? After thirty two years we can offer some valuable input into this subject.

In order for a marriage to have a chance you must marry someone that you love. Do not commit if you are not willing to make sacrifices or to remain willing to give this relationship your all. If you do not love your partner, do not make a vow that you have no plans to keep. I call that the "Ocean Commitment" meaning that your relationship is full of waves making it likely the last wave will be one of you bidding fare you well to a very bad experience.

Commitment is a very big word loaded with deep meanings. You must be dedicated to making your marriage work and dedication equals effort. Long lasting marriages are achieved by the efforts the both of you are willing to put forth. Marriage is not a burden but an endearing challenge with great rewards. You will have good times and bad, yet good will come in first as long as you set your sites to keeping your bond held strongly together.

Respect means being unselfish and caring. When we were first married I was clueless to what respecting my wife meant. I thought respect was a song and I liked the beat. It had not dawned on me that she had needs,
