Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew Pinski is nothing short of addictive. In this train-wreck turned t.v. show, viewers, or should I say, voyeurs, are permitted to peek in on celebrities as they journey from drug and alcohol addiction to sobriety. Imagine Gilligan's Island meets Breaking Bonaduce meets ER.
Pasadena Recovery Center provides the posh set for the show. Amidst lush vegetation, the celebrities nosh on appetizing selections that seem to just appear out of nowhere. The only difference between this place and and a four star hotel is that it staffed with Dr. Drew, who describes himself in the beginning of the show as a board certified "addinctionologist." Does such a thing exist? Was he taught by Dr.Phil?
As is the case on most reality t.v. shows, the term celebrity only loosely applies to the cast of Celebrity Rehab. In the premier episode, Captain Jeff Conway, of "Taxi" fame, steps aboard the S.S. sobriety, also known as the Pasadena Recovery Center, still under the influence. The worst addict on the show, watching Jeff Conway detox is equivalent to watching an entire series of after school specials. Jeff's disturbing performances would seemingly deter anyone from ever trying any type of drug, including cough drops.
Also stranded at the Pasadena Recovery Center are former "Surreal Life" co-stars Chyna and Bridgitte Nielson. This modern day millionaire and her wife(not sure who is who as either could easily pass for the "man") quickly set up quarters together. In this reality show reunion, Bridgitte battles alcoholism, while Chyna, unsure apparently even about what she wants her own name to be, is uncertain about her need for rehab. If nothing else, perhaps Dr. Drew can prescribe something to help her with her extremely swollen upper lip.
Jaimee Foxworth makes a convincing MaryAnn. Despite dabbling in porn and pot, Jaimee still appears almost as sweet and naive as she once did when she starred on the CBS hit "Family Matters." Dr. Drew has to only hope that Jaimee is not inspired by the "movie star" of the bunch, Mary Carey, to return to the adult film industry.
In the know at rehab is Daniel Baldwin. One of the Baldwin bunch, lesser known Daniel is more of a behind the scenes guy in Hollywood. This former cocaine addict professes to be sober, but still in need of recovery. Baldwin appears to be both the most sensible and most stable patient, often counseling others, especially Jeff.
Seth "shifty" Binzer wins the prize for best "actual" celebrity. The lead
