of humor and knows how to enjoy himself. A romance without fun will fizzle rather than sizzle.

10. He is considerate and kind to children, animals, old people, and anyone who crosses his path. Someone who lacks respect for others will soon inflict the same lack of respect on you.

11. He is not threatened if you offer to share expenses, but does not expect you to carry the major financial load.

12. He is interested in your career plans, and supportive of your ideas to better your life, even if that would mean separation from him.

13. He is not overly demanding, controlling, or manipulative. These character flaws will continue to expand as the relationship continues, and eventually turn it into a prison.

14. You feel relaxed around him, and do not feel under pressure to pretend to be somebody you are not.

15. He knows the fine art of negotiation, gets what he wants a substantial percentage of the time, and takes it in his stride when he doesn't.

16. He is flexible enough to adjust to change. Change is a constant in any relationship, as the partners grow.

17. He never lies about important things, and only very rarely about insignificant things. He challenges other people when he sees a credibility gap, and does not pretend that he agrees with something when he doesn't.

18. He's not afraid to voice his opinion, but doesn't feel the need to hammer others into agreeing with him.

19. You share basic values and aspirations. Though you may disagree freely about many issues, your underlying assumptions are similar. If you think that relationships are more important than money, and he thinks the opposite, you can have fun dating, but you will not be able to sustain a long-term relationship.

20. He likes you and wants to date you. If he doesn't, accept that. Continue your friendship. Who knows what the future will bring?

I know, I know. I left out the part about stable career, good cash flow, upwardly mobile family background, perfect genes, sporty car, athletic ability, sexual charisma that turns you to mush, and a manly, chiseled face that your girl friends will envy. If those things come with the package, that's fine. If not, they won't matter much when you're 85. Personal qualities are the most important pre-requisite of a meaningful relationship.
