Cures for constipation in dogs

As is evident in television commercials for Phillips Milk of Magnesia (tm), humans don't like to discuss constipation. We may also overlook the problem if it occurs in man's best friend. If you believe your dog is constipated, there are some things you can do to help get things moving again.

Some sources will tell you to add cod liver oil to their food, or give them fiber additives. These both will work, though there are some alternatives that your dog might find more tasty. Once source indicates that a can of pumpkin pie filling added to your dogs diet will work in matter of hours. Your dog will enjoy the semi-sweet flavor and it will work on your dog's digestive system and encourage a bowl movement. After the initial problem is alleviated, consider adding a couple of tablespoons to your dogs diet daily. This will help keep your dog regular.

To help prevent constipation you should ensure that your dog eats a proper diet and gets enough exercise. The key to avoiding the problem is proper diet. The old adage an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure holds true here.

If you're dog has a problem that you can seem to take care of at home, consult your veterinarian. Vet visits can turn quite costly and giving a dog an enema is no fun. Expect to pay dearly for this procedure.

If you choose to add fiber supplements to your pets diet or cod liver oil, contact your veterinarian to determine how much of these items your dog should consume. Be prepared when these items begin working to make many trips outside and possibly clean up a few messes along the way.

Keep in mind that many of the same ailments that affect humans can also affect our canine companions. When you are in the same state, you may become grouch or irritable. Your dog may display these emotions as well. Be patient with your dog and help him or her all that you can. Always remember, this too, shall soon pass.

You have probably heard that dogs should not be fed chocolate. There are many foods that dogs should not be fed. Consult your veterinarian to find out the proper diet for your dog. Dogs have a sensitive digestive system, as do humans. Proper diet and exercise are the key to a healthy digestive system in your dog.

If your dog is constipated, you may notice a loss of appetite. This is normal, as he or she has discovered that defecating has become painful. Your dog may attempt several times to have a bowel movement. The pain may cause your dog to whimper or yelp.

Ensure that your dog has plenty of water. If your dog is alone during the day, ensure that he has a source of water. Dehydration is a leading cause of constipation. It is perfectly safe to give your dog a laxative or milk of magnesia, however you should contact your vet to determine dosages.
