Mary, Mother of Jesus, Son of God. Big title.

I'm wading in here for two reasons.

One, the Divine space was empty and how can one have a debate if there is only one point of view.

The second reason? Divinity and what it means.

I know that there is probably a traditional view of what being Divine means and for some it will be different to what being human means. My personal belief is that God wouldn't pick just anyone to be the "mother" of his "son". It would take a pretty special list of criteria for someone to get that job and given that I wasn't in on the interview process I'm guessing that Mary fitted the job description.

Do forgive me for my flippancy.

I feel that the WHOLE question, and the debate as a result, is a bit off the mark. It's almost irrelevant whether one believes Mary to be Divine or "just" human? What does it matter one way of the other? According to the story she was selected as eminently suitable, charged with a sacred duty and she fulfilled her side of the bargain admirably.

Could you have done that? Would you have even accepted the challenge?

One more point that I really would like to raise. To be absolutely honest this is the real reason why I waded into this debate.

My belief is that we are ALL Divine. We all carry the spark of life within us, some of the sacred texts even list us as the Children of God so it would appear that I am supported in my inner knowing even by the texts I have never read.

Each human soul is a part of the One Soul of the Universe (or God if you like), each one complete in itself but an indivisable part of the whole. Each one of us is in sacred contact with all that is contained within the Universe by virtue of that one spark of life, that link to Divinity within us.

Life itself is a sacred thing, Divine to my mind. This amazing Universe of which we are an intricate part, is contantly changing, growing and evolving. Being "only human" appears to be one of the triumphs of the Universe and I am pleased to have had an opportunity to live my life within the shell of such a being.

I guess I took a bit of umbrage at the "only human" part of the question too but just didn't realise it until now! Being human is an absolute gift from God (or the Universe as I prefer) that has given all of us the opportunity to view life from a unique perspective. A gift as precious as anything else I can think of and one I am daily grateful for.

Was Mary Divine or just human? I think the answer for me is YES, to both questions.
