ETYMOLOGY: Logan is of Gaelic origin being initially derived from the Scottish place name "Lothians". From Scottish translation the name means "Finnians Servant" in Gaelic translation the name represents "little hollow" in relation to the original place name.

ORIGIN AND HISTORY:
In history there were primarily two Scottish Clans. The clan situated in the highlands was known as "Siol Ghilli'nnein" (Logan's of the north) or "Mac Clennan". These Logan's are thought to be the descendants from the Logan's of Easter Ross. Legends tell how their chief "Gilligorm" was killed in the battles of Fraser. At the same time his wife had fallen pregnant with their son. The Frasers were insistent that the new child would not grow to become a great warrior for his tribe and so broke his back when he was born. This tragedy caused the boy the inability to grow correctly and hence he became a hunchback therefore was given the name "Crotair" (croit/hump). As Croitar developed in a man he joined the monks and within this time founded the two churches "Kilmuir" in Skye and "Kilchrinin" in Glenelg. The second Logan clan occupied the Lowlands. The most famous name bearers in this clan were "Sir Robert" and "Sir Walter". Both were killed in Spain while escorted the heart of "King Robert the Bruce" to be buried in the Holy lands as desired.

POPULARITY:
Logan's strong stride for popularity began in the early 1970's. Although the name had been featuring on and off in the American social security records before this period. In 1973 the name entered the top 1000 names chosen and has not looked back since. Logan saw a slow rise initially but by the 1980's Logan became a name to be reckoned with. In 1991 Logan broke into the top 100 names chosen and only 15 years later entered the top 20 boy's names. In 2006 Logan sat in 19th position.
