ETYMOLOGY: The name is of Gaelic origin derived from the Irish Surname O'Riain meaning descendant of Rian. The name represents kingly or little king.



ORIGIN AND HISTORY:
With the roots firmly set within the Emerald Isle the most common association with the Ryan family name is linked to Co. Tipperary. Although the Ryan family was prevalent throughout the full thirty two counties, they were in their thickest within the Munster region. Due to their increasing numbers it was not long before "the Ryan family" became one of influence in the region. The strong connection to the area still remains to this date. The introduction of the Ryan family to American shores occurred within the 1840's. The huge migration of Irish seeking refuge across the Atlantic coincided with the great potato famine that occurred at this time.



POPULARITY:
According to the American social security records Ryan has been within the top 1000 names for newborns over the past 60 years. Ryan made an introduction to the chart in the mid 40's and has continued a steady climb up the chart. Since 1976 Ryan has fluctuated within the top twenty favorite boys names. Although Ryan has failed so far to make the top ten names in America the name is also making an impact on other areas of the globe. Across the Atlantic in its originated country Ireland Ryan sat in 14th position for 2006. In Scotland the name was in 4th position. In England it was the 25th choice of parents and in the state of NSW in Australia the name was in 9th position. With figures for the year 2007 shortly dude for release it will be interesting to note if Ryan can truly win the hearts of America and make the top ten list.

The movie saving Private Ryan; this 1998 production was directed by Steven Spielberg and contained actors such as Tom Hanks, Matt Damon and Vin Diesel. The film tells the story of US soldiers trying to save their comrade Private Ryan who is stationed behind enemy lines in World War 2. The movie received 5 Oscars.
