Best NFL quarterbacks of the 2007-2008 season

by Jen B.

The title "best NFL quarterbacks of the 2007-2008 season" is a misnomer. One quarterback surpassed the competition in remarkable numbers, broke numerous records, and led his team to the Super Bowl without losing a single game. His stats and play are so far beyond the other quarterbacks of 2007-2008 that ranking the top five or so, as I originally planned on doing, seemed senseless. Second place leads readers to believe that someone finished just behind first. In most seasons, that is precisely what occurs, and the quarterbacks fall in line accordingly, easily interchangeable into a higher or lower spot without creating a stir. This year, however, it would be a lie to say one quarterback does not top every sports writer's list. If, by chance, someone disagrees, it is only because they want to be different, maybe make a name for themselves by going out on a limb. Their lie is transparent; no one has performed on the same level as Tom Brady this season, and quite possibly, in history.

Tom Brady, a sixth round draft choice, has been a superb quarterback since he started for the Patriots seven years ago, leading his team to three Super Bowl wins and into the post-season five times. The 2007-2008 season has taken the Tom Brady/Patriots dynasty to a different level. The Patriots upgraded their wide receivers, switching out the "basic" package and installing the "limited" edition. Acquiring Wes Welker, Donte Stallworth, and Randy Moss in the off-season transformed a mediocre receiving core into a dynamic trio that teams cannot stop. And they haven't. While the 1972 Miami Dolphins solely own the title for an undefeated season, the Patriots are on their heels to tie them for this record and have already exceeded the number of wins they had (17-0 v. 19-0).

To get to this elite level, Tom Brady threw for an unprecedented fifty touchdowns and only eight interceptions during the regular season, breaking the NFL touchdown record. He threw for three or more touchdowns in ten consecutive games. His passer rating of 117.2 and passing yards of 4,806 topped all NFL quarterbacks in 2007-2008. He won the NFL's Offensive Player of the Year award. His teammates weren't phased by his accomplishments this season, agreeing that his work ethic outshines anyone they know. His "leadership, character, intensity, toughness, physically and emotionally" are the reasons the Patriots are engraving their names in history, according to teammate Heath Evans.

Sometimes good play is overshadowed
