How to send gifts to soldiers in Iraq

Our troops are in Iraq fighting for us. They have our best interests at heart although some of them may have never met us. They are only trying to survive and do what is right. They are defending our country and the way of life, as we know it. The very least we could do is send them a gift or care package to let them know we appreciate all they do.

The most useful places for information on what the troops will need are the American Red Cross and the National Guard. Check the local office in your area for specific details on what you can do to help. They might also be able to give you addresses and ideas on what to send.

Talk to people in your community about contributing to a care package. Take up donations in your area. Many businesses will be willing to help with items. You can start a supply drive in your local area to get the needed stuff to send.

Do not send bottles that will break or leak. Glass is not recommended. Send plastic bottles and trial size supplies. Hygiene items are always important. You may also want to send socks, underclothes, or even snacks. It is not a good idea to send food that will mold or go out of date before it will be received.

You will also need to avoid items that could be considered bootlegged. This could get you and the person getting the package in trouble. Do not risk it by sending alcohol or drugs. Send positive items such as phone cards, stationary, and books to read in his or her down time.

Use storage bags to wrap things inside the package. You can place items such as Q-tips or toothbrushes in individual Baggies. The recipient to protect small important items from the elements of the weather can reuse the bags.

Legibly print the name on a label and paste it on a large brown box. You can also write directly on the box. Use a dark permanent marker if you have one available. If you know the specific person's number, you should put that on there too. Make sure you have printed everything clearly. If you write messy, have someone else do it for you.

Take your package to the post office and tell them that you want to mail it to Iraq. They will weigh it and stamp it for you on the spot. Be sure to mail it first class, There is a book rate option that will be much cheaper but it can take four or more weeks to get where it is going. First class will get there much quicker.

Do not let this be the only package you send. There is nothing to it but to do it. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask someone. Our soldiers are giving us the gift of freedom. We should be willing to give them thanks for all they do.
