I remember like it was yesterday, the release of Mortal Kombat on Sega Genesis. Me and my brother hurried over to my neighbors on that day, coined "Mortal Monday", to see this hyped up game. But this game wasn't just hype, it started a revolution. Fifteen years have passed, but fighting games have evolved and still have a loyal fan-base. The selection of fighting games on the Xbox 360 is surprisingly slim at this point. This is perhaps because 2 titles in this genre have scared away the competition, Virtua Fighter 5 (VF5), and Dead or Alive 4 (DOA4). These games kick major butt.
Virtua Fighter 5, in my opinion, is the best fighting game on the Xbox 360. This is a beautifully presented but complex game that is an essential buy for hardcore gamers. Take note, this isn't a game where you pick up the control and become an instant master. The fighting system on this game was intricately designed and very difficult to master. The challenge to learn this game, however, is where the fun lies. Learning the fighting engine and unlocking all of the items on this game make for a lengthy and fun single player mode. Like all fighting games, the multiplayer mode is a blast. Nothing is more fun than beating up your buddies, on a video game that is. VF5 has also become a huge on-line hit worldwide, so now you can find out how good you really are! This game will surely set the benchmark for fighting games in the future, and should be considered by all fighting game enthusiasts.
Close on the heels of Virtua Fighter 5 is the hit game Dead or Alive 4. This game seems to be more suitable for the casual gamer. That doesn't mean it's an easy play. Learning all the moves, combos, and counters in this game is quite a task. This game like VF5, is aesthetically pleasing, along with a kick-butt soundtrack. The game modes are also deep and engaging, the unlockables and the customizable characters should keep you busy for a while. Don't like the way your fighter looks? Change his costume, change his hair, change whatever you want, it's your fighter! You can also take your skill online to fight and perhaps rank among the top of the leader-boards. Dead or Alive 4 is another great sequel in the DOA series, and definitely in the top tier of Xbox 360 fighting games.
Video games, like most everything else in life, are all about personal preference. Find which suits you the best. Both Virtua Fighter 5 and Dead or Alive 4 are challenging but great fighting games. If you play these I think you will agree that these set the standards in modern fighting games.
