In order to rate the top five movies of all time, I must first lay some criteria on the table. Some factors taken in to consideration here will be raw entertainment value, script and since movies originated without any sound and are essentially about pictures, we must consider whether or not they show us something truly extraordinary and original. Please do not confuse this list with my favorite movies of all time. These are the ones I consider the best, not necessarily the ones I would watch first.
#5: Titanic - The script is not the greatest, but "Titanic" gives audiences the closest view anyone could ever get of the sinking of the Titanic, one of the great tragedies in history. James Cameron spent a lot of time and money putting that film together to make it as authentic as possible right down to the china cabinets.
Think about it. Without that movie, unless you were an actual survivor of the Titanic, you would have no earthly idea what it could have been like to experience the unsinkable ship sinking out from under your feet. This movie gives us a chance to feel and see a glimpse of what it may have been like.
#4: Star Wars - Again, not the greatest script or storyline, but on the basis of originality and pure entertainment, you can't beat it. I'm not saying the story is not good, just making it clear that this movie makes my list purely on the strength of its ground breaking special effects and raw excitement offered to the audience. It is a true crowd pleaser and a real ground breaker. When it first hit theaters, it was the most innovative, original thing since sound was first introduced to cinema.
#3: The Apartment - Jack Lemon was truly one of the greatest comedic actors of all time and this movie holds one of his greatest performances. He was often known for playing the "nice guy" and this movie is a great example of it. Billy Wilder wrote the script and that is the real strength of the film for me and the reason I rate it third. It has a simple quality with complicated characters. There is light-hearted humor combined with just enough cynicism to balance it out and wind up with a superb comedy/drama.
#2: Gone With The Wind - It won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1939 and it can still sell out a movie theater today in 2008. I've seen it happen. There is more chemistry between Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh in that movie than in any movie I think I have ever seen. It can be argued that the script is a bit old fashioned in style and hard for modern

A list of best movies is so very subjective. And such a list almost always suffers from the biases and lack of knowledge
