Short stories: Internet relationships

From time to time we have all heard about Internet stories dealing with rip-offs, sad love stories or dangerous meetings. I hope to provide you with none of the preceding . This story deals with a man and woman meeting by chance, and becoming good friends. Personally I thought this type of story was for needy friend seekers. In fact this is a first person singular story, oh man, that's me!

Talk about an auspicious meeting, this wasn't one of them. I was on classmates.com, and went to the football section of my school. My college team has always been one of the top football programs in the nation. I simply wrote a football question, and posted it on the board. Two days later I received a reply, and just had to look at it. I expected the reply to be from a male student at the school now, or a male alum. Surprise, it was from a female, and she did not attend my university. She was an alum. from one of my schools rivals.

So why was she on my schools board? She said she loves to talk football, and my schools board is more active than hers. After all, we are quite superior to their school in football. We started talking about a common love of ours, and now hardly ever mention football. Once we started telling each other about ourselves, we couldn't stop. We had both spoken on the Internet to others, but this was different . Both trying to stay away from Internet loonies, we were protective of ourselves at first. But very quickly the walls of trust began to be built.

She started telling me things that she had not told anyone before, and I found myself trying to understand. I always gave her a honest reply to her stories, and she appreciated that. Soon I began to tell her stories of my past. We were always up front with each other, so she knew I was married (30 years), and she was divorced.

With me being from a big city, and her being from a small town our personalities seemed to mesh. A religious difference made no difference, we were simply having fun. Of course the conversation eventually led to sex, but living 800 miles apart we knew we were just joking. In fact she told me about meeting a man, and eventually getting married. You must wonder how jealous her new husband was. He and I write to each other daily now. My wife is too busy with work to care too much. She has been interested in some stories, but she says she has work to do.

Finally I sent her a picture so she can put a face to my writing, I'm also very confident in my looks. It took her a few weeks to send a picture back to me. We both said; "WOW!" We talked about how we would have made a great couple back in college. The typical, "I would have................you! We both know all it is, is talk. Ok , it includes some desire that will never be followed up on. But fantasy can be more enjoyable than reality. We all have our warts, but by mail you can't see them.

This friendship has come to mean a lot to both of us. We both have an illness, and we care how the other is doing. That's what friends do. We can share secrets, and confide in each other. We will never meet, but we care about each other dearly.
