Treason has been a major problem within societies since the days of Greek City-States. Betrayal is the most serious crime that can ever occur inside a nation. It is the direct violation of any social contract or collective agreement that have been a profound hallmark for any people groups.
From prehistory to the modern era, humanity has huddled together for protection. Aristotle defined men and women as political in nature, and this political drive can also be translated into social creatures. People lived together during the dawn of time in order to protect themselves from the wild nature. They formed hunting parties to fend off beasts; they formed militias to ward off rival groups. Their very survival was keenly tied to the bonds of brotherhood and common purposes. Nations are larger pictures of prehistory man. People herded together to increase their wealth, grow their economy and protect their very being. If there was ever a traitor in their midst, death and destruction could ensue.
Possible betrayals could turn the outcome of conflicts and tilt power balances within regions. In the era of a politically charged conflict against Islamic Fascism, there could be a backlash against political dissenters and activists. The system of checks and balances (within the Constitutional structure and the media) can help against potential injustices. There have been political and treasonous scares in America's short history. Injustices have occurred with poorly executed trials. A death penalty for traitors must be implemented upon review of the facts and then pursued by the leaders of this nation. Whether it was during the Revolution, Civil War or Cold War, traitors have been harshly dealt with. Nevertheless, treason is a heinous crime that can effectively counteract continuity within a nation. This continuity must ensue in the face of challenges and conflicts.
The fundamental basis for why treason is so sinister is the breaking of the social contract. When an individual or group subverts society that perpetrator must be cut off from society. Treason is an evil act that must be punished definitively. If those people seek to destroy the foundation of society, than society must seek to destroy the foundation of those people- their very lives.
