Birth Control: Acne's Bane
Oral contraceptives are primarily used to suspend ovulation in the female body; thus, preventing a potential unwanted pregnancy. However, due to the positive correlation between birth control pills and acne treatment, the FDA has approved "the pill" as healing therapy for problematic acne. Although, this may prove to be very beneficial for teens entering puberty and adults with fluctuating hormones, careful consideration should still be taken prior to using oral contraceptives as a remedy for acne.
Birth Control 'Controls' Acne-
Acne surfaces when androgen (female hormone) levels surge, resulting in overactive sebaceous glands; consequently, an excessive amount of oil is produced and the pores become clogged with a combination of dirt and oil. The initial concept of birth control pills was to deactivate the ovaries to prevent pregnancy, but researchers discovered that by doing this, androgens were being blocked. In theory, blocked androgens are conducive to less acne breakouts.
Oral contraceptives are comprised of a combination of estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) and progestin. Studies showed that by successfully releasing small doses of the artificial hormone, estrogen, androgens were suppressed.
Benefits of Birth Control Pills for Acne-
If topical treatment fails to improve the skin's condition, your doctor may prescribe birth control pills to help calm acne. In most cases of moderate to severe acne or acne related to hormones, oral contraceptives have proven to be highly effective at minimizing pesky outbreaks. Keep in mind, the colorful, swallowed pill does not offer immediate results for a clear complexion and acne may continue once medication is terminated.
Best Oral Contraceptives-
Oral contraceptives maintain the same goal, a preventive measure for pregnancy. However, research studies have shown that particular brands are more effective at treating acne. It is important to note that not every person shares an identical reaction to the same birth control pill. You may need to switch medications numerous times before settling on a pill that suits your needs.

Side Effects of Birth Control Pills-
As with any medication, potential side effects are inevitable; Harmful side effects may include gaining weight, irregular bleeding, and irritating acne. In rare cases, women suffered blood clotting, heart attacks and strokes.
Bottom line, the relationship between birth control pills and acne is the contribution "the pill" has on treating hormonal acne. Oral contraceptives are now linked to reducing stubborn acne and troubling side effects related to overactive hormones.
