Xbox 360 has quite a few hit games that are great on a local multiplayer format. To clarify, local multiplayer refers to machine to machine gaming in a co-op or competitive setting, not online multiplayer gaming. This is more or less playing with or against a friend that you are connected with on two separate consoles, as opposed to an online network of 30 people blasting away at eachother at one time. While Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 rule the online gaming world, there are a couple titles I believe to have the best local multiplayer experience.

Gears of War, in my opinion, is one of the best multiplayer games on the planet. This game was designed almost specifically for the multiplayer experience. This first person shooter adds a whole new dimension to the genre. Many co-op shooting games give roughly the same experience to both players, Gears of War breaks those rules. In this game each player can take different paths to ultimately conquer the same board together. Different scenery, different enemies, and different experiences for each player is a butt-kicking combination. The graphics and sound alone will blow your mind, but this game gives you far more. As far as co-op gameplay is concerned, no other local multiplayer game touches Gears of War.

If you aren't much into co-op, their is no better place to dominate a friend than on the football field. Madden '08 by EA Sports is a blast when playing against a friend. I can go on and on about the sweet graphics and awesome gameplay, but this game just isn't as fun unless you are linked up to a smack-talking buddy. Pick your 2 favorite teams, sit back, and settle it on the field. The fun with sports games like this lies in the fact that you have a different experience every time. The fear of defeat and the excitement of a win truly make Madden '08 a fun experience. If you have that competitive fire burning in you, this one is right up your alley.

Gears of War and Madden '08 are excellent choices if you enjoy local multiplayer gaming. But just because I like them, doesn't mean you will. The good news is Xbox 360 offers an array of other multiplayer shooting, sports, and fighting games you may also enjoy. So found at your favorite flavor of game and have a great time!
