like a normal man on the outside (at his workplace and home) and tried to keep that false persona, but it eventually fell through. He became less attentive and focused on his work; he separated from his wife, but could do nothing to control himself. The lawyer describes this process in the following quote: "We are willing to lose our [(the substance abuser's)] family, our savings and our integrity before letting go of our careers. But our addictions eventually corrode the careers as well, threatening the loss of everything we have" (Kelly 14). When his substance abuse became extremely evident to his wife (who still talked on the phone with him daily), he was confronted to face treatment. Fortunately, he realized that without help he most likely would end up dead. In treatment he was recommended a twelve step recovery system that ultimately eradicated substance abuse in his life. Today, his marriage is back together, his career is on track, and he is actively involved in sponsoring other addicts in their recovery.
It can be argued that people will act and live accordingly to how they were brought up, but the fact is that people can change no matter what the circumstance. It is important to upkeep your emotional, physical and spiritual aspects at all times to prepare yourself for temptation such as taking alcohol and drugs. The cause of such habits may not ultimately be up to the individual, but the choice to resist them is.
