The Niphilim. A group of beings first appearing in Genesis chapter 6 of the old testament. In Genesis chapter 6 the sons of God (phrase used to describe angels in the hebrew text) took wives with the daughters of men because they saw that they were beautiful. It is important to realize why scripture uses the phrase "sons of God". Why did moses not just say "angels"? Well the answer is provided all throughout scripture.
In John 3:6 it says "What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the spirit is spirit." To be born of the spirit means to be directly begot by God. The spirit does not necessarily need a flesh host. This applies to the fact that when we die, we dont just disappear, Scripture teaches that our spirit goes to one of two places, heaven or hell. The term "Sons of God" refers to spirits. These spirits must have a fleshly host before breding, which is why demon possession was necessary for the Nephilim to come into existence.
Further into the chapter Moses describes the earth-bound angels breeding and giving birth to "mighty men of renown." After the flood occured it was evident that these people were wiped out, but they continue to appear throughout scripture.
Some conclude that their spirits wandered the earth after the great flood and found new hosts. However, it is more likely that the original demons (fallen angels) who gave birth to the first Nephilim took new hosts and bred again with human females because of the fact that the Nephilim were mortal due to their human derivation. So, one could say that they did not survive the flood, but their father's did.
The next appearence of the word "Nephilim" is later in the old testament in the book of Numbers. The Lord demands the Israelites send out spies to the land of Canaan. When the spies come back they they describe the inhabitants as "Nephilim". This could mean literal Nephilim or it could have been just a word that the Israelites were familiar with and used to describe the Caananites (large and strong people) as being like Nephilim. Scholars tend to believe the latter.
In Hebrew, the word "Nephilim" means "fallen" or "those causing others to fall." With that in mind one could conclude that the beings were wicked like their fallen angel fathers, and that they were not a part of God's plan. This raises an intresting question. If these beings are not human nor angel what is their predestination? Can their sins be atoned for? According to scripture we know that demons cannot be atoned and that their judgement is final, but what of their half-bred offspring? The Bible simply does not discuss this.
So, are Nephilim or angelic beings around today? I certainly believe so. In Matthew 24:37, Jesus Christ says "As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man." In the times of Noah there were Nephilim, and their fathers (demons) are still around, whos to say that they can't breed again?
