Besides cardiovascular health for men, much attention is paid these days to prostate health, frequent urination, and prostate cancer. So I will address these two aspects through vitamin supplementation.
In reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, the risk factors are:
1) Smoking
2) High cholesterol levels
3) High blood pressure
4) Diabetes
5) Physical Inactivity
In having one or more of these risk factors, the risk of heart attack is increased.
1) Presence of one risk factor - increases risk by 30%
2) High blood pressure and high cholesterol - increases risk by 300%
3) High cholesterol and smoking - 350%
4) High blood pressure and smoking - 350%
5) Smoking, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol - 720%
There are many other physiological factors which contribute to the risks, but to keep it short, Type A personalities and men's coping styles influence cardiovascular health as well.
Men who have risks of cardiovascular disease will usually be low in their store of antioxidants. Antioxidants is needed for getting rid of free radicals which are released to to cell metabolism and damage. Besides the most common antioxidants such as Vitamin C and E, grape seed extract and pine bark seem to be beneficial as antioxidants too. Vitamin E supplementation protects damage to the heart by having too much bad cholesterol (LDL). Besides this protection, Vitamin E treats heart disease, recovery from stroke, and peripheral vascular disease such as painful calf muscle cramping which some men experience.
Vitamin C is the body's most important antioxidant because it is its first line of protection and defense, along with Vitamin E. It has been believed that drinking a glass of wine before dinner will protect against heart disease and strokes. It was presumed the flavonoids ( a substance which helps in the absorption of Vitamin C) in wine protected against LDL cholesterol damage. But several studies done with three groups of people, one drinking a glass of red wine a day, another a glass of white wine a day, and the third taking 1000 mg of Vitamin C, the group taking Vitamin C came out 20% better health-wise.
The studies show Vitamin C as an antioxidant which strengthens the collagen structures of the arteries, lowers total cholesterol levels, lowers blood pressure and raises HDL ( good cholesterol). For maintenance, a daily intake of 50 mg of grape seed extract or pine bark is sufficient. For therapeutic reasons, the intake can be increased to 150-300 mg.
Coping styles are
