Men have different coping mechanisms when it comes to health and health problems.  Due to their silence about physiological changes and their avoidance of doctors, vitamins should be taken to address two problem areas: cardiovascular and prostate health.

Men who are at risk for cardiovascular disease are usually low in stores of antioxidants. Antioxidants are needed to combat free radicals which are released during cell metabolism, causing damage and aging to the cells and tissue. The most common antioxidants are Vitamin C and E, grape seed extract and pine bark. Taking natural Vitamin E supplements can prevent damage to the heart, oftentimes caused by high levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) or high blood pressure. It can treat heart disease, and help in a speedy recovery from stroke. As well, Vitamin E is also beneficial in for peripheral vascular disease( painful calf muscle cramping), a condition which commonly occurs in men.

Vitamin C along with Vitamin E are the body's most important antioxidants, being the first lines of protection and defense for the body. According to recent research, it is believed that drinking a glass of wine before dinner can protect against heart disease and stroke. It is presumed that flavonoids ( a substance which helps in the absorption of Vitamin C) in wine protect against LDL cholesterol damage. Studies involving three groups of people: one drinking a glass of red wine each day, another a glass of white wine per day, and the third, taking 1000 mg of Vitamin C daily, and the group taking Vitamin C came out 20% better, health-wise.

Research indicates that Vitamin C as an antioxidant can strengthen the collagen structure of the arteries; lower total cholesterol levels; lower blood pressure levels and raise HDL( good cholesterol). levels. For maintenance, a daily intake of 50 mg of grape seed extract or pine bark is sufficient. For therapeutic usage, the intake can be increased to 150-300 mg a day.

For men who are Type A personalities, coping styles are very important. Characteristics of impatience, time urgency, competitiveness, aggressiveness, and regular expressions of anger tend to use up vital amounts of Vitamin C. When stress, anxiety, and anger are not being handled properly, these negative states increase the risk of heart attack.

Supplementation for Cardiovascular Health

1000 mg of Vitamin C should be taken daily as a maintenance dosage. Supplements of Vitamin E should include 400-800 I.U. for good health, while L-Carnitine
