Online video game reviews: Deep Blue Sea

Deep Blue Sea is nothing we haven't seen before. You have a board with differing symbols on, and by swapping two side by side you make a row of 3+ and these are removed. Tag on a story line and you have the game.

Well not quite. You see we have here is a well produced, pretty, and highly addictive game. The format of the game isn't much different from the others, but the small additions do set this game above the rest. The pointless and simple plotline (you're diving for treasure) is well done; you want to see the next part of the story. The added object of each round, getting the diving helmet (and others) to the bottom of the screen really adds strategy, really giving you something to focus on. And as each level is completed you gain a piece of the puzzle, which is used further into the game to help you remove difficult blocks. This is tied into the game neatly, as each puzzle represent a game tile, and only by linking up chains of this type can you power up the puzzle piece to use it. Additional help can be found by buying well thought out upgrades in the shop between levels, meaning collecting your treasure as you go becomes important.

With simple and pretty graphics, the focus here is on the addictive game play, without the need for a high end gaming machine to play it on. Approachable by most ages, the young ones will love the bright depth and images, while older children and adults will quickly pick up on the game play and strategy needed to progress. The learning curve is nice and steady, with new feature added every few levels to add spice to an otherwise repetitive process. The blocks with chains, which need to be matched up to an exact image, can cause real frustration and thought to get around.

Reflexive have produced a winner here, as seen by the simple fact that when the 60mins of your download trial are over, you scream at the computer and reach for the credit card. It's a game that you will play for five minutes, only to find that it's really been 3 hours, and though you may feel you've had enough after a few days, you will keep coming back again and again when you want something that's not too taxing on the brain cells.

An easy 4 out of 5 for this game, which while never rocking your world, will while away your time while the next big thing comes along. And when that's been and gone, you'll come back to the Deep Blue See
