effects include dizziness, restlessness and blurry vision.

Non prescription Diet Pills (usually herbal) and their dangers

Brazilian diet pills- The FDA has issued warnings against these pills as they contain active controlled substances (active ingredients of Librium and Prozac). Side effects include anxiety, insomnia and abnormal bleeding.

Caffeine and Green tea containing pills- Caffeine is an appetite suppressant and green tea contains two caffeine like chemicals, theophylline which is stronger than caffeine and theobromine that is weaker. In highly uncontrolled amounts these cause insomnia, anxiety, rapid heart palpitations and psychiatric disturbances.

Ephedra containing pills- well documented health risks of this plant product include insomnia, cardiac arrests and stroke. After a long legal battle, ephedra containing supplements are illegal in the United States of America.

Hoodia gordonii containing pills- the succulent plant from South Africa and Namibia is the latest discovery for appetite suppression and lowering blood pressure effects. But there is no scientific study or regulation studies done on this herbal medicine yet. There is no knowledge on cross reaction with other drugs. Side effects include dehydration and hard stools.

It is very important that an individual understands the side effects and dangers of any diet pill before intake. Diet pills as a part of regulated low calorie diet and exercise programs are long lasting than if taken on their own. Teenage children and women who are pregnant should be extra careful as these drugs are often in very high doses and could cause serious damage. Many medical insurance programs permit guidance of a primary physician and nutritionist who can guide a person regarding dietary pills and their regulated use.
