One of the best destinations in Germany for me is the city that lies on both banks of the river Elbe, mostly in the Dresden Elbe Valley Basin, with the further teaches of the eastern Ore Mountains to the south, the steep slope of the Lusatian granitic crust to the north, and the Elbe Sandstone Mountains to the east. With this pleasant location and its mild climate because of the river Elbe ,as well as BAroque-style architecture and numerous world-renowned museums and art collections, Dresden is often called Florence of the Elbe.
The capital city of the German Federal Free State of Saxony has a long history as the capital and royal residence for the Kings of Saxony who for centuries furnished the city with cultural and artistic splendor. Today Dresden is a cultural, political an deconomic center in the eastern part of Germany.
The city claims to be one of the greeenest cities in Europe. There are 63% of the city being green areas and forests. There are four nature reserves, too. The additional Special Conservation Areas cover mare than 18 sq. km. The protected gardens, paks and old graveyards host 110 natural monuments in the city. A very important period for the development of the city is the time from the 19th century until the 1920s when Dresden was a center of art, architecture and music. During that period, famous artists such as Oskar Kokoshka, Richard Strauss, Gotfries Semper and many others were active in the city. Dresden is home to several important art collections, world-famous musical ensembles and significant buildings from different architectural periodds. Although Dresden is often said to be a Baroque city, its architecture is influenced by more than one style. Other periods of importance are the Renaissance and Historism as well as the contemporary styles of Modernism and Postmodernism.
The Hofkirche is a sign of religious importance in Dresden. The church is the cathedral "Sanctissimae Trinitatis" since 1980. In contrast to the Roman Catholic church, the Frauenkirche was built almost contemporaneously by the citizens of Dresden. It is said to be the greatest cupola building in Central and Northern Europe. The Frauenkirche is the largest church in Dresden, making the city one of the few places where a cathedral is not the largest Christian sacred building. The city`s historic church is the Kreuzkirche.
