During the coldest winter months and the hottest summer months, the electric bill can be outrageously expensive. There are a few small minor things you can do to help lower the cost. Making a habit of reducing electric usage can shave off big bucks on your next bill.

Turn off the lights if no one is in the room. Myth Busters proved on one of their episodes that turning off the lights even for a minute or two can save energy. These small savings really add up over the long run.

Light a candle in the bathroom and in hallways. Even a small candle can provide enough light for just using the toilet. When children walk down dark hallways they always reach for the light switch. Even using a nightlight will help cut down the costs.

Replace bulbs with energy efficient bulbs. This can reduce the monthly electric bill by $20.00. Keep your bulbs clean by dusting them monthly. The dust on a light bulb can reduce lighting.

Use natural lighting as much as possible. Open the curtains during the day and don't turn on the lights until you have to. It's amazing how much light you will have when the blinds and curtains are open all the way.

Power strips are a great investment. Hook up all the cords behind the entertainment center and computer desk to power strips. Most televisions, video games, and modems have stand by lights on all night which are using electricity. Turn the power strips off when not in use or at least before going to bed to keep the electronics from pulling energy.

Wash clothes in cold water then run them through a second spin cycle. Hang to dry. Even if you don't have an outside line, use your shower rod. Hang a second shower rod in the middle of the shower for hanging more clothes.

Use the microwave, a gas grill, or a toaster oven. Heating up an electric oven uses a lot of energy. Toaster ovens get the job done quickly and are great for feeding two to three people. George Foreman grills are also quick and cooks meats in less than half the time of baking.

Turn off the heated dry setting on the dishwasher. Washing dishes by hand takes some time, but can save money. Fill your rinse sink up with cool water, don't let the water run to rinse the dishes. The cool water rinses the soap suds better than hot water does.

Some electric companies will average your usage. Keeping up with the meter readings will allow for contesting the
