Money-saving tips: How to lower your grocery bill

The rising cost of groceries during this recession has got everyone asking how to save money at the store. It doesn't matter what size your family is, grocery prices are outrageous. And with the price of necessity items such as eggs, milk, and bread going up, it's well worth to take a little extra time to plan that next grocery shopping outing.

Whether you get your local grocery store advertisements in the mail or online, look at the real bargains. If your grocer is offering chicken breast for under $2.00 a pound, then stock up and plan the next month's meals with chicken dishes. You don't have to eat chicken every night, just eat it a few times a week. If a 10 pound bag of potatoes are on sale for $3.00, make one night "Potato Soup Night."

When you go into the store to purchase these great buys, don't be distracted by items you don't need. Just go in, buy what's on sale and leave. That's the true secret to saving money at the grocery store.

These great bargains are also called "loss leaders." A loss leader is an item that the store has on sale and is actually taking a loss by selling it so cheap. It "leads" a shopper into the store as the store owners hope the shopper will spend more money on the higher priced items. Don't fall prey to their advertising. Stay focused and you'll come out on top.

There can be such a difference in prices between the store brand and the commercial brand that if you only purchase store brand foods, you will see huge savings in your wallet. As far as taste difference is concerned, usually the only person that knows the difference is the person who does the grocery shopping. Next time you're at the store, buy the store brand macaroni and cheese. See if anyone in your family can tell the difference. Don't tell them what you're doing, just see if they react. Often times, they won't say a word.

Society has led many people to believe they must have the commercial brand. Well, that's not true. That's just good advertising and they pay big money for that advertising. Do you know who actually pays for that advertising in the end? You do. That's right. That's why the prices are higher for commercial brands. You're paying for their commercials when you purchase the name brand product.

That's why the store brand is cheaper. They don't pay for all the national advertising. There are store brands for almost everything you can buy in a store, so you really have no excuse but to at least try them once.
