Should the US consider Ethiopia an ally despite its poor human rights record?

Title endorsed in part by:

Meles was re-elected to a second term as Prime Minister.

On May 15, 2000 Ethiopia held its third election which was heralded by many as the fairest election yet. Over ninety percent of the voting population of the country turned out at the poles and an increase in the number of the parliament's seats were filled by opposing political parties. Ethiopia's people saw this as a positive step toward pressuring the existing government into providing better housing and food to the countries' population that numbers almost seventy-five million.

The United States has watched the frequently unstable government of Ethiopia as it struggles to successfully function as the democracy that it purports itself to be. Even its recent history continues to be characterized by a barbarism that leaves a bad taste in the mouths of Americans. Still the country is attempting to rise above extremism and Jihadi philosophies to become a nation that can belong to its people. Perhaps Ethiopia's fight toward democracy is what we need to see and the basis by which we ought to throw our lot in with her country in the fight against terrorism. By American standards, she may still exhibit a poor human rights record. But, hey-look how long it took our country to stop treating human beings like slaves!
