they come into our homes without invitation, they do not knock, they just appear. That element of surprise and the sheer illogicalness, makes us shudder because we find that it is something that we cannot thoroughly explain and understand.

Magicians put on some pretty interesting performances and most of us love to watch them. But at the end of the show, we walk away questioning how the magician did it all! We love to solve the illusions in a three dimensional, mathematical way, with the possibility of real magic never entering our minds.

We are always relieved to find that the tapping outside was just a branch knocking against our window from the wind; The creaking in the hall way in the early hours of the morning, is just the woodwork in the house contracting from the outside temperature changes....and so on....

When we go to sleep at night, we pull the covers over our heads and drift off to a far off place for our well deserved rest. The fact that we have walls separating us from any outside intruder makes us feel comfortable and secure enough to close our eyes. The thought of a ghost that can materialize and enter through a three foot thick wall, is enough to give anybody a sleepless night.

Yes, ghosts can be very scary.
