The best romance novels are those with heroines that modern-day women can relate to. I remember when I first started reading romance, it seemed all the stories were historical, and all the heroes were fantasy Highlanders, Native Americans or cowboys. Today's readers expect more, and want a story that is believable and anything but predictable. Today's heroines are stronger, smarter, and funnier. Today's heroes are more realistic, and often times less than perfect. So, which novels make my list of the best romances?
1. Vicki Lewis Thompson's nerd series - Talk Nerdy To Me, Nerds Gone Wild, and Gone With the Nerd are just a few choices from this ever-growing series. Thompson's heroines are realistic women, running away from ex-husbands, or trying to impress the boss, or just simply trying to be the best single mom they can be. The heroes are, well, nerds. Their IQs are much larger than their brawn, and in many cases the heroine is the one to the rescue, but Thompson's men are sure to entertain with their talk of quantum physics and Bigfoot. Thompson earns big points for always mentioning protection in her novels, and actually managing to make it sexy.
2. Anything from Lori Foster - Who wouldn't love the Wild brothers, or the men of Harmony? Foster's heroes are manly men, from SBC fighters, to cowboys to bodyguards. They're also usually bad boys turned good by strong-willed, smart, sassy women. Foster draws readers into her novels in a way that makes the reader fly through the pages. And the sex scenes are hot! By often building new novels on characters from previous ones, Foster readers feel like they know everyone in town, and can re-visit their favorite characters in future books. With Foster, there never is an end to the happily ever after.
3. Annette Blair's witch series - Although this series is new, with only two books thus far, it still warrants the list because it is immensely entertaining. The first book, The Kitchen Witch, had me balled over in hysterics as I read and related to the disasters this witch could make in a kitchen. In Blair's world, having a magic wand still doesn't mean that everything turns out perfectly, but her heroes and heroines still manage to succeed, usually with the help of an aged relative. Blair is a great choice for anyone who likes a little humor with their romance.
