The extent to which the bible influences the ethics of those in business, will depend on how much the bible means to them. Some business owners will feel a sense of responsibility as Christians, to apply the principles found within it's pages, while others may not.
So the crux of the matter is the importance of the bible in the life of the individual business owner. Assuming the business person is an adherent to the principles and tenets found therein, it can without doubt have a heavy influence on their ethics and on how they conduct their business.
The Bible contains advice that leads a person to exhibit qualities like honesty, love for neighbor and kindness, qualities that will have an impact on how they deal with others, including customers, clients or other business owners.
Even children are aware of some basic bible commands such as "Thou shalt not steal" and "thou shalt not bear false witness". So lying and stealing would not be part of the business life of a person who had a desire to adhere to bible principles.
The "golden rule" recorded in the bible is another precept that would have an influence on people in the business world who wished to do things God's way. "You must do unto others as you would want them to do unto you" is a standard that would preclude cheating customers, lying about tax returns or selling shoddy products or services.
Putting yourself in the position of the recipient of the particular service or product can have us asking how we would like to be treated. This would help us to give the kind of service we would hope to receive.
Business in today's world has gained a reputation as being cut-throat in nature, an area of life where the almighty dollar comes first and things like honesty and integrity come second.
In contrast, many have proved that you can succeed in business and apply the principles found in the bible, adopting the motto that "honesty is the best policy". Running a business that is ethical will prove to be advantageous in the long run for both the customer and the business owner.
Ultimately, the bible will only influence business ethics to the extent the business owner respects the bible and feels a sense of liability toward it.
