Top comeback predictions in sports for 2008

Everyone loves a comeback story. From the 1972 Dallas Cowboys playoff win over the San Francisco 49ers (a 17-point comeback in the fourth quarter that cemented the legend of Roger Staubach) to the 2004 Boston Red Sox claiming victory from the jaws of defeat over the New York Yankees (down three games to none in the ALCS, they took the next four games, then swept the World Series) to the Indianapolis Colts coming back from a 21-3 deficit to win the AFC Championship 38-34 and subsequently win the Super Bowl, everyone remembers the Comeback Kid. It's a story that makes us stand up and cheer, or pull our hair out if our team is on the losing end. Either way, it's a part of what makes us watch sports, what makes it so integral to our culture.

The comeback story of 2007, most people will agree, had to be Randy Moss, easily proof of "the right team in the right situation." He was definitely a key factor in the Patriots' undefeated season and playoff victories, after a terrible stint in Oakland that caused a lot of people to forget about him. After breaking Jerry Rice's record for receiving touchdowns in a season, he won't be forgotten again. Now, as we move closer to the Super Bowl, one cannot help but ponder the great mystery: Who will be the comeback story for this year? It's only January and already many possibles have announced their candidacy.

The first one that rings in my mind would be the "Big Three" of the Boston Celtics. Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce seem thus far to have turned bad situation on three bad teams into a chemical reaction that can only spell trouble for opposing NBA teams. The three average 57.6 points per game between them, more than half of their team's effort. But despite the fact that no individual even ranks among the top five in the league in any offensive or defensive category, it's their obvious revitalization and leadership of the young squad Boston has that is truly remarkable to watch.

In Pittsburgh, the citizens are mourning the six-to-eight week loss of Sidney "Sid the Kid" Crosby to a high ankle sprain. Last year's NHL MVP and scoring champ is not an easy loss to sustain, but by the end of it, the Penguins hope to remain in the playoff hunt (Crosby carried the team on his back to the top of the Atlantic Division this far into the season, after all) but without the best player in the game right now, it's looking bleak. What effect will he have upon his return? It's not difficult to guess that The Kid's return is something
