There are many common feline illnesses, and some of the symptoms can mimic different illnesses. After doing some research I have compiled the following list of illnesses and their symptoms. This is not a complete list of common illnesses, but they are the more common ones. You should always consult your vet when you suspect your cat is ill, and have testing done for the illnesses that have similar symptoms so you can make sure you get your feline friend the proper and accurate treatment.
Allergies: this can be either food or skin allergies. The symptoms are; hair loss, scratching, itching, head-shaking, red bumps (sometimes puss filled), scaly skin, compulsive licking, dark skin, red fur, and chewing (self-mutilation).
Ring worm: symptoms include; hair loss (in circular patches), dandruff, scaly skin, chin acne, itching, and scratching.
Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): symptoms of this illness include; increased and frequent urination, painful urination, compulsive licking of genital area, blood in urine, and urinating in inappropriate places (lack of using the litter box).
Hairballs: more of an ailment than an illness and the symptoms consist of; vomiting up balls of hair, retching cough, and intestinal blockage (constipation).
Ear Mite: these little mites will look like a coffee ground/tarry discharge, and cause itching, scratching, head-shaking, excessive ear wax, head-rubbing, and inflammation.
Ear Infection: symptoms include; foul odor, inflammation, head-shaking, swollen ear flap, head-rubbing, itching, and scratching.
Feline Diabetes: excessive thirst, lethargy, overall run-down condition, increased urination, and weight loss.
Feline Kidney Disease: loss of appetite, increased urination, foul breath, urination in inappropriate places, and vomiting.
Kidney Stones: difficulty walking, urination in inappropriate places, tenderness in the belly and along the back, frequent urination in small amounts, and visible blood in urine.
Hyperthyroidism: weight loss, irritability, hyperactive behavior, and increased appetite.
Feline Leukemia: prolonged sores or wounds, difficulties breathing, weight loss, coughing, difficulty swallowing, infections, eye problems, lethargy, and low iron.
Constipation: less frequent or difficult bowl movements, will go to the litter box, but will strain to pass stool, lethargy, loss of appetite, and can cause your cat to vomit liquid feces.
If you know your cat you should be able to catch illnesses at early stages, which is best. Also be aware of flea and tick related illnesses during the spring and summer months when infestations peak. Take preventative measures against the ticks and fleas by using treatments like Advantage or other flea and tick preventatives.
