take an interest in "green chip" stocks. These are emerging companies that are a bit more risky than blue chips, but if they are successful over time they may one day be blue chips.
The best strategy for being a part time investor is to spread your stocks over a number of sectors to minimize risk. Look for companies to buy and hold that have opportunities for growth.
Keep an eye on your portfolio as much or as little as you want, but have enough confidence in what you own so you can take breaks if you want to do something else without worrying that your stocks will go down too much (you might be surprised to find they may have gone up!).
Add to your portfolio when you find stocks of good value or worthy prospects and sell only if you need to realize gains for a worthy purpose or to invest in a cheaper stock that you think might go up (don't forget about capital gain tax though).
Whatever investor you determine yourself to be make sure you have goals and a strategy of how you are going to achieve them. Plan for your short term and long term future. Know your personality and how you act in response to stressful situations.
Power yourself with knowledge about the stock market and the companies you are investing in. Doing this will improve your confidence and increase your ability to make sound investment decisions maximizing your potential to make money in the stock market.
